Baidyanath Jyotirlinga Temple – History, Legend and Mythology
According to Shiva Purana king of lanka Ravana tell lord Shiva to come his kingdom Lanka. Lord Shiva gave him a his jyotirling and tell him that he should not be deposited this jyotirling anywhere on the earth. If the linga was put anywhere it would be fixed to that place and cannot be moved. After that Lord Vishnu appeared in front of Ravana in the form of a brahmin. Ravana asked him to hold the Jyothirlinga for sometime. After Ravana relieved himself. he came back and see that the jyothirlinga had been fixed to the earth. This jyotirling is known as Baidyanath.
The main temple was built by king Puranmal of Gidaur in 1516. In the 8th century A.D. the last Gupta Emperor Adityasena Gupta ruled this region. The Babadham temple has been famous since then. The temple is popular among devotees for its various architectural styles and beautiful surroundings. The temple also known as a beautiful idol like Nandi which is a bull and a vehicle of Lord Shiva. Shrines of Maa Parvathi, Maa Kali, Maa Jagat Janani, Kal Bhairav and Lakshminarayan are other main shrines at the temple complex.

There are lots of devotee visit this temple everyday but most famous time for darshan is a month of sawan and festival of Maha shivratri which is the birthday of Lord Shiva. This temple is also considered as 52 Shakti Pitha shrines of Sati where heart of Sati fell when her half burnt body being carried by Shiva at the end of Daksha’s yagna. The three temples are considered to be the real Jyotirlinga of Lord Vaidyanath. one is Baiydanath temple at Deoghar, second is Vaijnath temple at Parli and last one is Baijnath temple at Baijnath. Kawad yata is other major events held by devotees. In this yatra the devotees collect holy water of Ganges from Sultanganj which is nearly 117 kilo meters away from the temple in Kavadi and walk all the distance by foot, wearing saffron dyed clothes and offer that holy water to jyotirlingam of Baidyanath temple.
