Rameshwaram Jyotirlinga Temple – History, Legend and Mythology

The holy temple of Lord Rameshwar was done by none other than Lord Rama himself so it’s known as Rameshwar. The jyotirlingam of lord Shiva was worshipped by Lord Rama to atone the sin of killing Ravana. Hanuman flew to bring the Linga from Kailasa, for Lord Rama to worship. As it was getting late so Rama worshipped the Lingam that was made of sand by Sita Devi. This Lingam which was worshipped by Lord Rama is known as Ramanathar. After Hanuman returned lord Rama pacified Hanuman & named this Lingam Kasi Viswanathar. Devotees have to worship Kasi Viswanathar before worshipping Ramanathar. Lord Rama also built a bridge across the sea to rescue his wife Sita from Ravana.

Rameswaram Temple is spread over area of 15 acres. The temple was expanded during the 12th century by Pandya Dynasty, and its principal shrines sanctum were renovated by Jeyaveera Cinkaiariyan and his successor Gunaveera Cinkaiariyan of the Jaffna kingdom. The pillared corridor extends to 4000 feet in length which is embracing more than 4000 pillars. Encompassing nine levels the eastern Rajgopuram soars to the height of 126 feet. Ramanathswamy Temple has twenty-two wells. It is said that these wells were made by Lord Rama himself when he fired arrows in the sand. These wells are main attraction of this temple which are also recognized with their distinct properties.
