Murudeshwar is a well-known pilgrimage and beach destination located in the Bhatkal Taluka of Uttara Kannada district in Indian state Karnataka. Murudeshwara temple is dedicated to Lord Shiva. The Murudeswar town was earlier known as ‘Mrideshwara’. It was later renamed as Murudeshwar after the construction of the temple. This temple is famous for the world’s second-tallest Lord Shiva statue which should certainly be visited along with the world’s tallest Gopura of the Murudeshwar Temple.

Lord Shiva temple situated adjacent to sea with magnificent background. The gopura of temple has 18 floors and you can go to 18th floor to have a good view of the whole township. There is an interesting legend associated with the history of the temple. Legend of this temple was lord Ganesha tricked Ravana into giving up the shivlingam which he had received as a gift from lord Shiva for his penance and planted it at Gokarna. Angered by this, Ravan tried to destroyed the lingam after breaking pieces of lingam one of the part fell at Kanduka Giri where the Murudeshwar temple was eventually built. The statue of Shiva here is the world’s second tallest and it lies on the coast of the Arabian Sea near the temple. The temple complex is of very recent construction, with a tall 20 storied Gopuram. It is 249 feet tall is considered the tallest Gopura in the world. Maha Shivaratri during February is the important festival celebrated here with much devotion and religious rituals.

The Statue of Lord Shiva in Murudeshwara is the second biggest statue of Lord Shiva in the world after the statue in Nepal which is 123 ft high and very attractive for visitors. The statue has been placed such that it gets direct sunlight was established by businessman and philanthropist Mr. R.N.Shetty. It took about 2 years to build. The statue of lord Shiva had four arms and was adorned in gold. Strong gusts from the Arabian Sea blew one of the arms off and the rain dissolved the paint. This place is very beautiful and nice and also you can enjoy beach here and get good sea food there.
