Sabarmati Ashram is a historic place of Ahmedabad. People also name as Satyagraha Ashram, Gandhi Ashram and Harijan Ashram. It is located in the Sabarmati suburb in an Ashram road area in the Ahmedabad. Originally it was the Satyagraha Ashram, reflecting the movement regarding passive resistance launched by the Mahatma. Before The ashram established at the Kocharab Bungalow of Jivanlal Desai on 25 May 1915 but later relocated to the banks of Sabarmati river so that’s why it has famous as Sabarmati ashram. This was the residence home of the great Mohandas Karamchand Gandhi. He lived for about twelve years from 1915 to 1933 with his wife named Kasturba in this place.
This ashram has played major role in Ghandhi’s Dandi march or Salt Satyagraha. This Ashram is an eye-witness of many significant and historical movements. Government of India has declared this Ashram as a “National Monument”. The total area of the Sabarmati ashram is thirty-six acres of land which is too much. Sabarmati Ashram has many important places are Hridaya Kunj, Nandini guest house, Vinoba Kutir, Upasana Mandir and Gandhi Sangrahalaya which all areas connected to the great Indian men Mahatma Ghandhi. There is a small cottage named ‘Hridaya Kunj’ in which Gandhiji lived. Hridaya means Heart. This place has great value where visitors can see a writing desk, a khadi Kurta, a yarn spun which all are used by Gandhi ji and also there are some letters written by him too. Right hand side of Hridaya Kunj, there is a guest house named Nandini where all guests are put up. Vinoba Kutir is named after Acharya Vinoba Bhave who stayed here. Upasna Mandir is located Between Hridaya Kunj and Magan Kutir, which is an open prayer ground where Gandhi I used to pray with the followers. Here Gandhi I was giving a session about the question answer after prayer. The main part of the ashram is Gandhi Sangrahalaya which has five units, a library, two photo galleries and an auditorium.
