Adalaj Ni Vav is an oldest and historic Step well in Ahmedabad, Located in the Adalaj. It is also popular as Rudabai Adalaj Step well. The perfect location is between Ahmedabad and Gandhinagar. Only Gujarat has more than 120 stepwells which are full of historic significance and Adalaj is one of the most popular out of it. Adalaj step well was built by Mahmud Begada in 1499. He built this for his queen Rudabai so the name of the step well given after his wife. It is an excellent illustration of mixture of Hindu and Islamic architecture hard work. Same as all steps well, the purpose behind this Vav to provide a resting place for pilgrims and travellers of that era. The Vav has a five underground floor and it is beautifully carved. Step wells are also called stepped ponds in the ancient period and are used to reserve rain water during monsoons. This is most visited by tourist than any other stepwell in Ahmedabad. Inside part of well remain more than 7 degrees cooler than outside because of sunlight are not capable to reach there. It has become the Hindu religious place and also other community also visit this Adalaj Stepwell.

As per the history, one of the Vaghela dynasty named Rana Veer Singh rule this territory, then during 15th century. During that time his neighbour Mohammed Begda attacked on him and killed rana veer singh and win his territory and also his wife named Rani Roopba. She was so beautiful. Even after her husband’s death she accepted marriage proposal from the Mahmud Begada with the condition to complete the building of the stepwell. The king was so much fascinated by the queen’s beauty, so he built the well in so much less time. After completing the step well the king asked roopba to marry him, but instead Rani Roopba end her life. She walked down into the well with prayers and jumped into the well. This Adalaj well is a witness of a historic tragic moment. You can see this incident carving on the wall of the well. The Adalaj Ni Vav has a five floor with underground level. Similar to other step wells in Gujarat This vav has also an octagonal shape with large hole on top of it. Amazingly designed stone pillars supports all Floors. There are three Main entrances into the vav which take us to the first storey. The most beautiful carving of ‘a pot of water of life’ and ‘tree of life’ sculpture inside the stepwell. There are also carved symbols of Jain and Hindu gods at various levels of the step well. The decorative design of flowers and Islamic graphic structure blend very well and looks mesmerizing. The Three level step well is dug straight into the table of water and Its deep interior provide cooling and relax from the tearing sun rays. It is a superb experience to watch Adalaj Vav at night. The night Lighting is amazing and really mesmerizing. Its real legacy place and must to visit with family.
