The Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is a heaven for birds and also famous as Pakshi Kashi of Karnataka. It is a bird sanctuary located on the kaveri river bank in the small Mandya District of Karnataka state in India. The Ranganathittu Bird Sanctuary is 19 km far from Mysore City. The Bird Sanctuary got its name after Sri Ranganatha Swamy. The Bird Sanctuary covers only 40 acres of land but still the largest bird sanctuary of karnataka state. Near the Bird Sanctuary on the river bank, there are six islets located which is the favorite place for insects. The Bird Sanctuary is a foundation of six islands and declared as a bird sanctuary. The real beauty of the sanctuary raises during the monsoon. The place is a most favorite breeding area for many species of the bird. Every year lakhs of birds came to this sanctuary for nesting and breeding. A large number of birds from North America, Australia and Siberia migrates here during August to December. During winter months, starting from mid-December, Approx 40,000 birds crowd gather from half of the December from various parts of the world.
