The Taj was built by Shah Jahan as a memorial for his third wife, Mumtaz Mahal, who died giving birth to their 14th child in 1631. Mumtaz Mahal is favorite wife of Shah Jahan. The construction of Taj Mahal was started in A.D. 1631 and completed at the ended in 1653 A.D. Taking 22 years worked by 20,000 people from India and Central Asia worked on the building with cost of 32 crore rupees at that time. The main tomb of the Taj is basically square with chamfered corners. The Taj Mahal covers an area of 42 acres in total with the terrain gradually sloping from south to north.

Taj Mahal was designed by Ustad Ahmad Lahauri. The material used in tajmahal was brought from all over India and central Asia by 1000 elephants. The central dome is 187 ft. high at the centre. The Taj can be accessed through the west, south and east gates. Out of the total area of 580 meter by 300 meter, the garden alone covers 300 meter by 300 meter. The Taj Mahal is considered to be the greatest architectural achievement in the whole range of Indo-Islamic architecture. The Tajmahal Garden is the very impressing part of the complex. The square garden is divided into four parts with two main walkways.
