Fr. Alexia de Menezes, the Archbishop of Goa who is laid the foundation stone of Basilica of Bom Jesus church on 24 November 1594. It was completed construction on 15 May 1605. This church is one of the most visit Churches of India and also it has a mummy of st Francis Xavier which is opened for only one day throughout the year. The church is called Bom Jesus means good Jesus or infant Jesus to whom it is dedicated.

Outside of church was built out of black granite. The material of pillars was brought from Bassein at 300 km away also church has not plastered on the outside. The main altar is 54 ft high and 30 ft broad and It measures 183 ft in length,55 ft in breath, and 61 ft in height. This UNESCO World Heritage Site is a church, which is situated in Old Goa, and is an excellent example of Baroque architecture. It’s a UNESCO world heritage site and is visited by millions of tourists every year. The remains of St Francis Xavier are on display every 10 years. Last it was on display was in Dec 2014. Next schedule for display will be Dec 2024.
